3 Squadron LIFETIMES

Marcus Lindsay Macinnis, CBE
1914 - 2009

021800
Supplies from the Australian Comforts Fund arrive at Headquarters, 3 Squadron RAAF.
Identified far left is 03139 Flight Lieutenant Marcus Lindsay "Mac" Macinnis.

Iain Macinnis, The nephew of Marcus 'Mac' Macinnis (the Squadron's Equipment Supply Officer in Egypt, Syria, and the first two Libyan campaigns) has sent us the following description from his uncle's funeral last October:

"Loving husband of Jean (deceased), and a much-respected family elder.  Served with 3 Squadron, RAAF in the Middle East and was sometime Controller of Equipment. His was a fine innings, from a Gentleman-Player. A funeral service was held at Weston Creek Presbyterian Church, A.C.T., on Friday 30 October 2009."

The AWM has some nice photographs of "Mac", celebrating the Squadron's 100th victory and checking off supplies in the trackless desert.  (Some of the Squadron's supplies had to be procured from "unofficial" sources and were not necessarily paid for - but Mac kept the top-scoring Desert Squadron on the move!)

The AWM also has an extensive interview with Mac on:
     http://www.awm.gov.au/transcripts/kmsa/s00944_tran.htm .

Mac was one of the "Originals" who departed from Richmond for the Middle East in 1940.  His interview has many interesting stories including using his own Lysander aircraft to bring up urgently-needed aircraft spares!
